For decades, the choice of long- life coatings for any given project was predicated on performance needs.  A monumental structure such as a skyscraper in a major metro area might specify the use of a fluoropolymer- based topcoat to ensure decades long gloss and color retention.  A major steel bridge would call for the use of a fluoropolymer topcoat to offer long- term barrier corrosion protection.  Of course, high performance typically comes with a premium price.  Today, the monetary cost of a project is not the only consideration on major projects.  Environmental cost must be considered.  Long life coatings, those that last decades, are inherently sustainable.  This presentation will focus on the environmental benefits of long- life coatings including a comparison study of the carbon footprint of a fluoropolymer powder coating.
